THE NAME.........YESHUA

Teaching by Paul Cohen The Name יֵשׁוּעַ - Yeshua The Name יֵשׁוּעַ - Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ -Yeshua was a common name in the Second Temple period. It is derived from the Hebrew word for Salvation which is יְשׁוּעָה (y’shuah), in the Tanach (the Hebrew Scriptures) it is used primarily as a physical and often a national salvation! When we read this in the Brit Chadashah (the Newer Testament) it broadens this concept further and add a new layer of meaning, namely a personal salvation. The name of Yeshua is as you can see related to Salvation and this is brought out in Matthew 1:21 “and you shall call his name Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ Yeshua - saviour or deliverer), for He will save (יוֹשִׁיעַ) His people from their sins.” This is the work of God on behalf of mankind. Salvation in both Older and Newer Testament is always by grace through faith, nobody ever achieved his or her own salvation, it was and is and for all time will be, a work done by God, not ever by man! Please understand that once we are saved we ought to do good works, but they do not get us credit points with God. We need the gift of God, afterwards, we have become His workmanship, as it is written in Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Messiah Yeshua for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” It is God who saved us and so we, who are now in Messiah who “believe” are called to devote ourselves, as is written in Titus 3:8 “The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works. These things are excellent and profitable for people.” The salvation gift that we received ought to make us want to do the good works in Messiah, They do not add anything at all to the work of God,that He has accomplished by the atoning work in Messiah. Because the work of salvation by Messiah is the work of God, and only by Him, we Jews and Gentiles receive salvation on the same basis. By faith in His atoning work, once we receive that salvation we are transformed and are being transformed. We now live by faith in Messiah and receive again by grace atonement for our sins. Forgiveness of all the wrongs we have done and are justified by Him. We receive as gifts even more; for God places upon us the righteousness of His Son and we receive the adoption as sons and daughters of God. We can now stand before the Holy God sanctified in Messiah, having received redemption and His glorification. We are no longer lost and condemned but transformed into the image of Messiah in glory. As such we need to live lives worthy of the grace bestowed on us, and desire to declare the calling upon us, by sharing and lifting up the Name of Yeshua, our Saviour, the Lord who saved us. Shalom in our Saviour Yeshua Paul
